Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)

Rhinoplasty or Nose Job is a plastic surgery procedure aimed at correcting and reconstructing the shape of the nose.

Are you unhappy with the shape or profile of your nose?

If you feel your nose is too big for your face or it is bent as a result of an injury, then a nose job can solve the problem so you never have to think about it again – other than to admire its improved appearance in the mirror.

A nose job or rhinoplasty surgery involves reshaping the nose so that it looks and functions so much better.

As the nose occupies the central position on the face, it is a focal point and a key aesthetic feature. It is made up of a unique combination of skin, cartilage, bone and nasal lining. Successful surgery with long-lasting results requires a detailed analysis and precise surgical technique to attend to each of these component layers and individual issues.

Rhinoplasty may be performed by a closed or open technique.

When the open technique is required it is through a small incision on the undersurface sides of the nose. These scars fade with time to become almost imperceptible. The operative techniques required vary from patient to patient, depending on the extent of the underlying problem.

Noses can be shortened, lengthened, narrowed, widened, straightened and refined. Common requests are for hump reduction or to make the tip less bulbous, shorter or more defined.

The surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic. Upon waking there will be a splint on the surface of your nose, which will remain for 2 weeks. There may be packing ribbon within your nose that can usually be removed within 24 hours. Most patients will stay overnight in hospital. There may be some facial bruising, especially under the eyes, which generally fades within 1-2 weeks. Sutures are removed 5-7 days after the operation.

Rhinoplasty surgery has a profound effect on the appearance of your nose and your face as a whole, yet should still look natural and in proportion with your facial dimensions. One nose size or shape does not fit all, so your nose job procedure should be tailored to your desires and needs.

A little known fact or consideration is that making a large nose smaller can often make a person appear more youthful and attractive and, if combined with other non-surgical techniques, could even eliminate or delay the need for a facelift.

Patients who have breathing difficulties caused by their nose need a rhinoplasty, while patients who don’t like the look of their nose may benefit from a rhinoplasty, but do not need one.

In terms of appearance, a rhinoplasty aims to achieve a more refined version of yourself. The result is a better proportioned nose and a nose that better suits your face. A well performed rhinoplasty can have a dramatic effect on ones appearance.

Your nose job begins in your surgeon’s office discussing the procedure in depth and analysing your nose. The operation can be performed from entirely within the nostril or through a small scar under the nose. The cartilage and bone that make up the framework of the nose are adjusted and manipulated so as to improve the shape of the nose and your ability to breath.

I encourage my patients to take 2 weeks off work. They wear a nasal splint for the first 2 weeks, which can be confronting in the work place. Most of the swelling and bruising will have settled in this timeframe.

Believe it or not, a nose job is a relatively painless procedure. Pain tablets are more than adequate to keep you comfortable and are usually only required for the first 3-4 days.
