In choosing your plastic surgeon with confidence, there are five points I’d recommend you follow. The first point, your plastic surgeon should be FRACS qualified. What that stands for is that they are a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and what those five little letters represent are on average, 10 years of post university training. So you should see FRACS appear after their name and business cards, on their website, et cetera. Second point, plastic surgeons are affiliated with the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons. That’s the ASPS. The ASPS is responsible for training the next generation of plastic surgeons and most plastic surgeons are involved in surgical training. Your third point, most plastic surgeons will also be affiliated with the ASAPS which stands for the Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
Now you may find reference to and logos for all of those bodies on surgeon’s website and in turn you can check with those bodies that those surgeons are affiliated with them. Your fourth point is where does the surgeon operate? Now plastic surgeons operate out of large tertiary referral hospitals as well as day surgery facilities. So if there’s a problem, you’ll be looked after by your surgeon and you’ll be safe. For my part I operate at St. Vincent’s Hospital so I admit patients through St. Vincent’s Public and St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, not to mention St. Luke’s Private Hospital. The final point, the fifth point is meet several plastic surgeons. Before having that operation you’ve been thinking about you want to be totally confident with the surgeon so have several consultations with different plastic surgeons. That’s my recommendation for you. Five simple points and if you wish to see me, come and visit me at Woollahra Health & Beauty. Take care.
